Built in 1887, the Cozzarelli Memorial Home is one of the town's last surviving historical structures, and was featured in "The Sopranos," as Tony mourned his mom's loss.
The Washington Avenue building could be designated an "Area in Need of Redevelopment," as a resolution approved during a council meeting last month will allow the Planning Board determine that, NJ Advance Media reports.
Michael Perrone, the president of Belleville's historical society, says the town is looking to demolish the building to make way for a high-density apartment building. The property is apparently being eyed by a developer doing another big project in town.
Belleville's Township Council voted 3-2 to begin the process.
"The building is in immaculate condition in a prime location," Perrone said. "Hardly an area in need of redevelopment. It could make a great restaurant or spa or luxury office. If the estate wants to sell the building all they have to do is put it on the market."
The funeral home has been praised for its design, the inside having been renovated by its late owner, James Cozzarelli.
